The choir was founded on 23rd March 2006, when Walter Sulzer decided to see if he could find singers interested in joining a mixed choir that could interpret polyphonic music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Five women responded to his advertisement and four of them are still with the choir today, which now has a nucleus of some 25 members from various countries (currently Canada, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland and the United Kingdom), plus additional “floating” members who spend their time between Portugal and their home country.
Being such an international group, it is appropriate that the choir sings in various languages, and the repertoire has now been extended from the original Renaissance and Baroque to include songs from many eras, as well as both traditional Portuguese folk songs and works by Portuguese composers. The choir has appeared in many cities in the Algarve and has taken part in the Choral Festival of the Algarve and the Choral Week of Lagoa, as well as performing in concert with other choral and instrumental groups.
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the choir – and we continue to go from strength to strength.
Canticorum is a chamber choir, made up of some 16 singers from the main group. They also have a wide repertoire of songs, and regularly perform in concert and at ceremonial occasions. Please see the page “Book Canticorum” for more information.
